It can be eaten by itself or added to other food and drinks

Most people think that Manuka honey only comes from New Zealand, but it’s actually widely produced in Australia as well. In fact, Australia’s warmer climate provides the best conditions for growing Manuka plants (and we have 83 species) that produce honey with high amounts of methylglyoxal (MGO) from their unique nectar and pollen, as acknowledged by world experts in honey production.

Therefore, Australian Manuka is given the title of SUPER MANUKA.

Manuka honey comes from tea tree plants, in particular Leptospermum polygalifolium in Australia and Leptospermum scoparium in New Zealand.

Over the years there has been some controversy around how to differentiate varying types of Manuka honey. It’s taken a lot of time, money and effort, but there are now clear methods and guidelines to ensure Berringa Super Manuka honey is found pure and authentic. Key naturally occurring chemical markers identified in honey and nectar are now used to classify Super Manuka honey. These markers include MGO, dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and leptosperin, which are present in Berringa Super Manuka honey in a range of concentrations.

In fact, it is now globally accepted that the best term for measuring the active levels of antibacterial and anti inflammatory affects is MGO.

So what makes Super Manuka honey different from the regular honey you put on your toast?

Aside from its origin, Berringa Super Manuka honey also looks different to regular honey. It’s thicker or more viscous, and typically darker in colour.

But it’s not just all about looks. Recent studies have shown that Berringa Super Manuka honey has an antibacterial component that sets it apart from other types of honey.

What makes Berringa Super Manuka honey special?

Super Manuka honey, like regular honey, has antibacterial effects which result from its ability to produce hydrogen peroxide. But being a premium bioactive honey, it must also contain additional non-peroxide factors which boost its ability to fight bacteria.

At Berringa, we look for the key naturally occurring chemical markers that are found in Super Manuka honey (MGO, DHA and leptosperin) to determine its purity, and use MGO to measure its level of antibacterial activity.

MGO is found only in Leptospermum honey, and is a clear indicator of a Berringa Super Manuka honey’s antibacterial strength.

The MGO you choose really should be dependent on your intended use and how strong you want the antibacterial activity to be.

Berringa Australian Super Manuka Honey is divided into three strengths:

  • Table grade MGO active (60 MGO – 119MGO)
    – Provides some health benefits, ideal for daily use.
  • Antibacterial grade (120 MGO – 400 MGO)
    – Has a high level of bioactivity, supports natural healing and bacterial balance.
    – Also ideal for daily use to help promote general wellness.
  • Superior antibacterial grade (800 MGO – 900 MGO)
    – Very potent antibacterial honey, often used for skin and wound care.
    – Excellent for oral use to help promote gastrointestinal well-being.
    – Soothes commonly occurring stomach upsets and irritations.
    – Additional anti-inflammatory effects.

Berringa Super Manuka honey can also stop the growth of bacteria by drawing away moisture in a wound and dehydrating the bacteria. This is because it has a high sugar and low moisture content.

It’s also acidic, with a pH between 3.2 and 4.5 (the pH of your blood is around 7.35-7.45). Persistent wounds tend to have a highly alkaline environment that isn’t ideal for healing, so adding some Super Manuka helps to create an environment that promotes healing.

Put all of these factors together and you’ve got yourself a super honey.

What science says about Berringa Super Manuka honey

Even though honey has been used for the treatment of ailments since ancient times, the science behind Super Manuka honey has only been explored in depth relatively recently.

The use of honey is now gaining increasing acceptance in modern medicine, particularly due to its antibacterial activity and wound healing properties.

Research has found Super Manuka honey to be effective in treating postoperative infections in newborns, other infected wounds, skin grafts and burns that had not responded to conventional antibiotics and antiseptics.

A study of people with chronic, non-healing leg ulcers showed that Super Manuka honey, when used once per week for four weeks, helped to reduce the size of the wound by more than half, eliminated odour from the wound, and alleviated pain.

Other research has found that Super Manuka honey is effective in reducing healing time and managing infection in people with diabetic foot ulcers. And it has shown to be more effective than hydrogel dressings (a water-based gel dressing) in eradicating an antibiotic-resistant strain of Golden Staph (Staphylococcus aureus) in people with venous leg ulcers.

Bioactive honeys, such as Berringa Super Manuka, can help to fight bacterial infection, and have been reported to inhibit growth in around 60 species of bacteria.

It is effective against Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, the bacteria which often causes hospital infections in breathing tubes and urinary catheters.

Golden Staph is also known to cause rhinosinusitis, or inflammation of the lining of the sinuses, along with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Super Manuka honey is effective against these pathogens in this context as well.
