Whilst pregnant we know what you put in your body is so important which means you won’t see any additives, preservatives, colours or artificial nasties. Only real stuff. Whole foods. Our vegan crackers are diary, egg, gluten and sugar free.

*Produced on equipment that makes products containing gluten, dairy and nuts.

INGREDIENTS

Sunflower seed meal

Sunflower seed meal is a perfect base for our crackers. Thanks to decent levels of good quality fats and protein it acts as a very satisfying seed; helping to fill you up. Having significant levels of vitamin E, magnesium and selenium, they also have the ability to enhance your health.

Buckwheat

Buckwheat is not related to wheat at all. It is actually a gluten free seed and is one of the best sources of high quality, easily digestible proteins. We love buckwheat because it is rich in the bioflavonoid, rutin, a very important nutrient for pregnant mum’s indeed as it assists in strengthening connecting tissue. Think prevention of vaginal tears, varicose veins, stretch marks and assisting with wound healing (cesarean section) …the list could go on! In addition to this, buckwheat can help to draw excess fluid from your body (fluid retention). We all know that puffy feeling in those last few months and post baby delivery don’t we? Having a low glycemic index and making up a fairly high proportion of our biscuits it will help to make you feel more satisfied and give you longer lasting energy. Thank you buckwheat. Shall we hand you over a Belly Bump cracker now?

Activated Charcoal

As a pregnant mum (or anyone in general!) there is no doubt that when your digestive system is functioning well and in a healthy state you feel much more energized and happy. This natural ingredient has been used for ages to help with the discomfort of morning sickness and other unpleasant pregnancy symptoms such as bloating, wind, indigestion & heartburn, nausea and vomiting.

Activated charcoal works by clearing the digestive tract and binding to unwanted by-products and reduces digestive issues as a result. Activated charcoal makes our crackers a truly functional food.

Murray River Gourmet Salt Flakes

It was an easy decision choosing this magical salt for our crackers. Mums to be need extra minerals and nourishment but they also need to be satisfied. From personal experience and in speaking with many mums, when you weren’t craving something sweet you wanted something salty! Murray River Gourmet Salt ticked so many boxes.

Murray River Gourmet Salt Flakes are produced using the pristine mineralized brines from ancient saline acquifers of the Murray Darling basin. The stunning pale pink hue of the salt flakes is a result of the mineralized brines which are particularly high in magnesium, calcium, and to a lesser degree, potassium and iodine.

Chia Seeds & Flaxseeds

BOTH flaxseeds and chia seeds are a wonderful source of omega 3 fats, fibre and calcium as well as phosphorus. So the fact that our crackers have both means you are getting one heck of a good dose of these beneficial nutrients.

Extra virgin olive oil

We all know there are countless ways extra virgin olive oil can improve our health so it was a no brainer to add it to our pregnancy cracker. Not only will your body benefit from it’s high antioxidant and phytonutrient levels but your baby will also. During gestation there is an incredible need by the fetus' brain for quality fatty acids. Extra virgin olive oil has been found to prevent oxidative damage during the perinatal period.

FAQ’S

What is the difference between charcoal and activated charcoal?

Activated charcoal is not charcoal used in your barbecue grill, what is left over from your camp fire or the charcoal on your burn toast! Barbecue charcoal and burnt food charcoal is loaded with toxins and chemicals, and should never be consumed.

Common charcoal is made using organic substances such as wood, coal, peat or petroleum products. Activated charcoal contains perforated pores and is specifically used to manufacture medicines and cosmetics as well. Manufacturers heat the common charcoal in the presence of oxygen to develop pores in the charcoal, which forms the activated charcoal. These pores help trap harmful chemicals when you ingest it.

Is activated charcoal safe?

Activated charcoal has been studied for toxicity due to ingestion, skin contact and inhalation and all studies have shown it to be harmless. The most likely side-effect with internal use, if a person is going to have any, is slight constipation at higher doses but this is easily counteracted. We however tend to find that most people have an improved transit time and better bowel habits. i.e. helps with constipation.

Will activated charcoal harm my baby?

There is no researched literature that has found that activated charcoal will in anyway compromise an unborn child. It is deemed safe and can be taken during pregnancy and lactation.

So, as far as the actual scientific literature shows, there is no compromise to infant health or pregnant/nursing mothers when given Activated Charcoal powder daily. "It is also useful in acidity of the stomach, flatulency [gas], and in the nausea and constipation attending pregnancy."

Are there any precautions I should take with ingesting activated charcoal?

It is best to take your activated charcoal away from prescribed medications (90 minutes).

Is activated charcoal good for detoxification?

Activated charcoal helps to detoxify your body and get rid from the unwanted toxins. It is essential to eliminate the harmful toxins from the body to promote a healthy digestive system. Higher exposure to toxins initiates cellular damage, allergic reactions and reduced immunity. Activated charcoal consumption during pregnancy can therefore help to keep the body in tip top condition.

What else is activated charcoal good for?

  • Aiding in reducing bloating, flatulence, indigestion and heartburn
  • Helping to treat reduce bile flow (cholestasis)
  • Improved dental health and teeth whitening
  • Detox and heavy metal removal
  • Antidote for drugs, chemicals and poisons
  • To remove odours
  • Managing cholesterol levels
  • Treating hangovers
  • To help with colic

Shouldn’t I be keeping away from salt?

Salt often gets a bad wrap. Salt that is filled with anticaking agents and comes from a poor quality source is not health advantageous, unlike salt such as Murray River Gourmet Salt Flakes. Do remember though, salt is primarily a source of sodium. Excess sodium can lead to health issues including high blood pressure and edema. One should not be consuming excessive amounts of salt (i.e. over 2300mg per day), even the good stuff!
