SAMe Gold, enteric coated tablets contain S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and cofactors formulated to help support neurotransmitter production for the regulation of healthy mood. Due to the critical and important actions of SAMe, it is indicated for many varied conditions. It has indications for mood - depression, mood swings, nervous tension, anxiety and stress; liver health – liver detoxification, improving antioxidant status and protecting the liver from toxins; and inflammatory and painful conditions such as osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Adults Only – Take 1-4 tablets daily with food. Start as 1 tablet daily, increase to 1 tablet twice daily on day 3, then 2 tablets twice daily on day 10 if necessary, or as prescribed by your healthcare practitioner.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

• SAMe Gold comes in an enterically coated tablet to provide greater stability within the gastrointestinal system until it reaches the small intestine, where it is absorbed. This gives SAMe greater bioavailability.

• SAMe has a number of clinical applications due to its involvement in biochemical processes such as transmethylation, transsulfuration and polyamine synthesis.

• SAMe is the major methyl donor in the body. During transmethylation, SAMe donates its methyl group (CH3) during synthesis of other molecules including neurotransmitters, phospholipids, RNA, DNA and other proteins. Transmethylation is considered to be inhibited in people suffering from depression. SAMe’s antidepressant effect is due to its positive impact on neurotransmitter metabolism, cell membrane integrity and receptor sensitivity.

• SAMe is required for the synthesis of neurotransmitters including noradrenaline, serotonin and dopamine which play an important role in regulating normal mood and/or behaviour.

• A number of reviews and meta-analyses examining the use of SAMe in depression concluded that SAMe was superior when compared to placebo and just as effective as the standard tricyclic antidepressants and better tolerated by patients in the treatment of depressive disorders. Another trial implementing 800-1600mg of SAMe daily as an adjunctive agent in 30 treatment resistant patients over a 6 week period found an astonishing 50% response rate, with 43% of the sample experiencing remission of symptoms

• Vitamin B12 and folic acid are co-factors in SAMe metabolism.

• Tyrosine is a precursor to the neurotransmitters dopamine and noradrenaline and a deficiency of tyrosine has been implicated in the pathogenesis of mood disturbances.

• Vitamin B6 helps maintain a healthy nervous system; it is an important coenzyme in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitters GABA, dopamine and serotonin. Deficiency states of vitamin B6 are associated with alterations to mood and other psychological disturbances.

• Vitamin D is involved in neurotransmitter synthesis including acetylcholine and the catecholamines. A deficiency in vitamin D can also lead to mood disturbances such as seasonal affective disorder and low mood.

• SAMe’s therapeutic activity in fibromyalgia is in part due to neurotransmitter regulation. SAMe may assist in the management and symptomatic relief of fibromyalgia by improving mood and relieving fatigue, pain at rest and morning stiffness associated with fibromyalgia.


• SAMe, during the transsulfuration process, is also responsible for the production of proteoglycans which are important for cartilage regeneration and maintaining healthy joints. SAMe Gold provides temporary relief of osteoarthritis and may assist in the management of osteoarthritis.


• SAMe is also required for polyamine synthesis, via methylation. Polyamines are required for the regulation of cell growth and production of spermidine and spermine which exert an anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect giving SAMe its therapeutic benefit for osteoarthritis as well as fibromyalgia.
