The risk of developing BPH increases with age and is thought to be an androgen-dependent disorder. The conversion of testosterone into the more potent dihydrotestosterone (DHT) form is thought to be the mechanism driving BPH. Saw palmetto, Pygeum and Epilobium all help to inhibit this conversion.
Saw palmetto is standardised to contain 85-90% (288mg) of free fatty acids. These fatty acids and a mixture of phytosterols are considered to be the active components of this herb.
Results from at least 45 clinical studies in the treatment of BPH with Saw palmetto indicate that Saw palmetto fruit extracts can produce improvements in mild to moderate lower urinary tract symptoms . Clinical trials utilised Saw palmetto extract standardised to contain 85-90% free fatty acids1.
Pygeum and Epilobium inhibit inflammatory chemicals helping to reduce the inflammatory process involved in the enlargement of the prostate.
Zinc is found in high concentrations in the prostate and is important for normal prostate health and prostate
hormonal balance. Pumpkin seed oil is also high in zinc.
Lycopene and selenium are powerful antioxidants and free radical scavengers that help to protect the prostate gland from oxidative damage.

Indications
Herbs of Gold Prost-Aid Forte contains herbal and nutritional ingredients which
may be of assistance in the relief of all major symptoms of medically diagnosed
Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH); including increased urinary frequency,
nocturia, weak urine stream, dysuria and incomplete emptying of the bladder.
BPH is an age-related, androgen-dependent metabolic disorder in which there is
non-malignant enlargement of the fibro-muscular and epithelial structures of the
prostate gland. This condition is extremely common amongst ageing men, occurring
in more than 50% of men over 50 years of age.
Prost-Aid Forte contains a dose of Saw palmetto, demonstrated to have beneficial
effects in the relief of symptoms of medically diagnosed enlarged prostate
conditions. Traditionally, Saw palmetto has been used in maintaining and
enhancing male reproductive and urinary health and sexual functioning.
Saw palmetto contained within Prost-Aid Forte is standardised to contain 90%
free fatty acids. These fatty acids and a mixture of sterol compounds, including
beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol (phytosterols), are considered to be the
pharmacologically active components of this herb.
Prost-Aid Forte also contains zinc, an essential mineral needed for the normal
functioning of the prostate gland. Zinc is in the highest concentration in the
testes and prostate in adult men.
Zinc is also an important component of antioxidant enzyme systems and is of
assistance in limiting oxidative induced damage to cells. Zinc helps to maintain
the integrity of the immune system.
The herbs Pygeum and Epilobium, which have traditionally been used in
maintaining and enhancing male reproductive and urinary health and sexual
functioning, are also included in Prost-Aid Forte. Pygeum may help to relieve
urinary symptoms associated with medically diagnosed BPH.
The antioxidant lycopene; a fat soluble, non-provitamin A carotenoid that
imparts a red colour in fruits is included in Prost-Aid Forte, along with
Selenium.
Selenium is required for maintaining the health of the prostate gland and for
testosterone synthesis, normal sperm maturation and sperm motility. Selenium
supplementation can enhance immune function and is an important component of our
antioxidant defence systems. Turnover and loss of selenium are accelerated
during times of increased oxidative stress.
Each Herbs of Gold Prost-Aid Forte capsule contains 5mg of zinc, needed for the normal
functioning of the prostate gland. Zinc may play a role in androgen metabolism,
with studies suggesting that Saw palmetto and zinc may inhibit the activity of
5-alpha reductase, the enzyme responsible for the conversion of testosterone to
dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT binds to the prostate gland, stimulating cell
division, with resultant prostatic enlargement. Saw palmetto may also inhibit
the ability of 5-alpha reductase to bind to androgen sites in prostate cells.
No added artificial flavourings, colourings or preservatives, yeast, sugar,
gluten, lactose or salt.
This product contains selenium which is toxic in high doses. A daily dose of 100
mcg of selenium from dietary supplements should not be exceeded. Selenium
containing products are not suitable for use by children under the age of 15
years.
