Glucosamine is found in high concentrates in cartilage and other connective tissues. Melrose Plant Sourced Glucosamine is a unique new form of Glucosamine hydrochloride. Sourced from fermented corn it is 100% free from shellfish or animal ingredients. There are two major forms of Glucosamine, the hydrochloride form and the sulphate form. There is a discussion over which of the two glucosamine salts, hydrochloride or sulphate, is preferred for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Glucosamine sulphate is the form used in much of the clinical trials conducted.
It is important to understand that both salts, in the pure form, deliver equally effective amounts of glucosamine to joint cartilage. The hydrochloride form yields 83.1% glucosamine and the sulphate form yields 62.8% with the remaining 20% being sodium or potassium chloride. Both forms of glucosamine dissolve in the stomach's hydrochloride acid, which makes all the glucosamine readily available for absorption in the small intestine.
