More Information
The Ginkgo tree is one of the oldest surviving trees. It is a deciduous tree that can live as long as 1000 years. It grows to a height of 30-37 metres and a diameter of 1-1.2 metres. It is sometimes called Maidenhair Tree as the leaf resembles a maidenhair fern. It was brought to the America in 1784 to the garden of William Hamilton near Philadelphia , and is now planted throughout much of the US as an ornamental tree.
In China the Ginkgo Tree is cultivated as a sacred tree. It is mentioned in the oldest Chinese Materia Medica from 2800 BC. It is thought to assist the flow of blood to the periphery, and particularly to the head. As a result it can be useful in relieving symptoms such as memory loss, reduced reaction time and difficulty concentrating. It may also relieve cramping, pain and weakness particularly in the calves, due to its ability to support peripheral circulation.
