Golden Seal is native to North America and was used
extensively by the American Indians as both a herbal
medicine and a clothes dye. Golden Seal is nearly extinct in
the wild, however it is now cultivated for both its
medicinal and colouring uses.
Golden Seal is a valuable plant in herbal medicine. It
has a number of actions, including but not limited to
anti-catarrhal, stomachic (assists digestion), and
supporting the integrity of the mucous membranes. It
contains berberine and hydrastine that seem to account for
many of the herb`s actions. Golden Seal can be of assistance
in cases of catarrh of the mucous membranes, including the
respiratory, urinary and digestive systems.
Therapeutic Use
Golden Seal has anti-inflammatory and astringent
properties as well as immune-supporting properties
(largely due to its hydrastine, berberine and canadine
alkaloids). It has traditionally been used to help
soothe the mucous membranes that line the respiratory,
digestive and urinary tracts. Useful when taken at the
first sign of respiratory problems, or colds. May also
relieve the congestion and excess mucous symptoms of
catarrh.
