TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Zinc is an essential nutrient for over 300 enzyme systems in the body.
Poor immune function
Zinc
Zinc deficiency has been shown to contribute to impaired immunity. Zinc plays an
integral part in the activity of serum thymic factor, which is an important
immune modulator.[1] It is also involved in RNA and DNA synthesis and hence cell
division. As the immune system depends on rapid proliferation of cells to be
effective, zinc deficiency must impair immune function. In laboratory animal
models, zinc deficiency has been found to reduce the number of antibody-forming
cells in the spleen and decrease or impair T-killer cell activity.[2]
Furthermore zinc and vitamin C deficiencies retard wound healing and thereby
impede the containment and repair of infectious lesions.[3, 4]
Vitamin C
Vitamin C has well known beneficial effects on the immune system and may inhibit
a number of different viral and bacterial infections. Studies have shown that
supplementation of vitamin C may reduce symptoms and severity of the common
cold.[
Vitamin A
Some of the immunomodulatory mechanisms of vitamin A have been described in
clinical trials and can be correlated with clinical outcomes of supplementation.
These include enhanced antibody production and lymphocyte proliferation,
sustaining the integrity of mucosal epithelia in the gut and increasing T-cell
lymphopoiesis. There is no conclusive evidence for a direct effect of vitamin A
supplementation on cytokine production or lymphocyte activation.[8]
Locally acting, vitamin A is important for the mucosal integrity of the mucous
membranes of the body and may therefore be beneficial in the healing of ulcers
and herpes lesions.
Lysine
Lysine may be a beneficial nutrient for immune function and has been shown to
suppress a number of viruses including Herpes simplex. Both topical and oral
supplementation of lysine has been found effective for healing herpes lesions
and suppressing outbreaks.
